Note that 3/4 conduit is the inside diameter, while 3/4 dowel is the outside diameter. That is why wooden wires won't conduct electricity. After some experimentation, I discovered that round toothpicks were just the right size to correct the impedance mismatch (I learned that term in electrical engineering school, not carpentry school). So I just built some gaskets out of toothpicks and electrical tape (see how effortlessly I recombine genres) and the compression connectors work fine.
