The mounting plates are a strange, truncated diamond shape, so I used a 1 inch spade bit to get some clearance for the corners, and then used a brand-new 2 5/8 inch hole saw to clean out the interior. My old hole saw only had a 1/4 shank, but the new saw has a 7/16 shank, which means I needed to use the monster 1/2 inch drill.
